Xpression! A Picture of a Thousand Words is a photographic exhibition on Hip Hop culture in South Africa. It will bring together rappers, musicians, poets, DJs and graffiti artists in a collaborative effort to rekindle the flame of the underground Hip Hop movement.
The exhibition combines photography, Hip Hop music, and graffiti art. The heart and the drive of the exhibition are the impressive photos captured by Dutch photographer Edward van Herk during Splash Jam, a popular Hip Hop event that took place regularly at Ebaleni Carwash in Orlando West, Soweto. It was organized and hosted by well-known underground Hip Hop group Asylum Trybe.
The 20 photos to be exhibited at Goethe on Main are not only an exceptional work of art, but also capture the magical atmosphere and positive vibes at Splash Jam. The works show an audience comprised of people from different cultural backgrounds who share their undying love and passion for underground hip-hop.
