A Free 2 day Writers Masterclass Workshop

Adapting Classics for the Stage

Facilitated by Debo Oluwatuminu

Tuesday 18th & Thursday 20th August 10:30-4:30pm

The workshop will explore the following:

  • The questions every writer should ask themselves when they choose adaptation material.
  • Selecting material suitable for adaptation
  • The different types of adaptation
  • How the process of an adaptation differs from that of an original playwriting process
  • Acquiring the rights for what you wish to adapt and the legality, royalty and credit issues of an adaptation of work by another person
  • How to stay faithful to the source while creating something new

Debo Oluwatuminu is a poet, writer and director. His plays include Fractured Dream (1986), Goodbye John Mbiti (1988) and The Onion Skin (1998). His play A Pebble in the Sea featured in Tiata Fahodzi’s African shorts at the Arcola in 2004. In 2007, he worked in collaboration with Conflict Zone Arts Theatre, with writers from Israel, Palestine, Pakistan and Kosovo. This was supported by the Jerwood Foundation and Soho Theatre. Closing Time and Seawall were the outcome of these collaborations. Debo works across different mediums. He recently completed work on an African adaptation of the American Television series Desperate Housewives in association with EbonyLife TV and Disney.
