TANZANIA: FACING UP TO THE CHALLENGES

July 8, 2015 @ 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

| FREE

The Britain-Tanzania Society in collaboration with the Centre of African Studies, SOAS presents:

TANZANIA: FACING UP TO THE CHALLENGES

Speaker:  Dr Wilbroad Slaa, Secretary General, CHADEMA

CHADEMA (Chama cha Democrasia na Maendeleo or Party of Democracy and Progress) is the main Opposition political party in Tanzania. The Party was founded in 1992, when new political parties were permitted to register. Dr Slaa was its candidate for the Presidency of Tanzania in 2010. There will be new elections in October 2015. This time the main opposition parties have agreed to field a single candidate and it is likely that this will be Dr Slaa.

Dr Slaa has qualifications in a wide range of subjects, including a doctorate from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome in 1977. He taught in several theological colleges, and served as Secretary of the Catholic Bishops Council of Tanzania, before being elected to Parliament where he served from 1995 to 2010. We particularly welcome Tanzanians to our meetings.

Please note: the London tube may not be running that day. But SOAS is about 15 minutes walk from Euston, Kings Cross and Charing Cross stations.
