Orquésta Chungu is group of international musicians who are touring Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Ethiopia. The group has cooked up a menu spiced with tasty grooves from Mozambiqué to Ethiopia featuring music by some of the great composers in East Africa.
With a line-up consisting of Will Ramsay on saxophone from South Africa, Girum Mezmur and Abiy Woldemariam on guitar and keyboards from Ethiopia and Martin Lillich and Dietrich Woehrlin from Germany on bass and drums, the group will add a unique flavor in each country by inviting local musicians to join them for some sizzling performances. The whole tour will be documented on CD.
The five core musicians of Orquésta Chungu are part of a music education workshop tour of the four East African countries, supported by the German Foreign Office and the Goethe-Institut in partnership with the Jazzamba School of Music in Ethiopia, The Bayimba Music Academy in Uganda, Action Music Tanzania & Music Mayday in Tanzania and the Institute of Cultural Music in Kenya. The musicians and music teachers participating in the workshops are being trained to read, write and analyse their own music. By using an innovative core curriculum, they are enabled to teach their own programs and to document, preserve, promote as well as teach their own music.
From the 1st of June to the 7th of June Orquesta Chungu will deliver a 5 day workshop at the Institute of Cultural Music Kenya.
