Shanti-Chi presents their 5th annual festival; Nne Agwu Afrakan Storytelling Festival 2016, in honour of Miss Lou supported by our recently appointed patron Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Commemorating a decade since her passing, the Jamaican folklorist will be at the heart of this year’s festival. Ensuring Miss Lou’s legacy is passed on to future generations and her monumental contribution to the oral art-form is appropriately celebrated.

Held at Debden House Campsite, Epping Forest IG10 2NZ, from Friday the 29th July  – Monday the 1stAugust, the family friendly 3 nights / 4 day weekend of camping, which has been extended this year by a whole day, with the addition of; a crafts market, a wellness corner and children’s yoga.

The festival responds to the conversations and evident hunger in our community for practical progress to augment ourselves, our family and each other, to take charge of our history and heritage. This unique event places importance on uniting the diaspora, creating a space where the community can exchange ideas, knowledge and skills whilst rediscovering the wonders of nature.

Our fine Griots and storytellers include Griot Chinyere, Doris Harper-Wills, Eli Anderson, Beyonder, Omer Makessa, Melika Queely and more, much more…

We will be announcing this years winner of the Nne Agwu short story writing competition. The winners will receive: a certificate, their story will be performed by a professional storyteller at the festival, the child will get a chance to tell their story live on PowerXtra radio and with a family member receive free entry to the festival 2017. The main aim of Shanti-Chi is to present, promote, preserve and celebrate the craft and heritage of our oral traditions.

Look forward to high energy well designed storytelling workshops, performances from the best storytellers in Britain, live musicians from all disciplines, healthy tasty on site catering, early morning yoga and night forest walks, round the fire and under the stars open session, a chance to try your voice at storytelling. You will have access to the well being area and our small African market place. First-aid trained volunteers are on hand to help you set up and pack down your tents and guide you through the festival experience. We welcome first time campers. This a truly intimate affair. We have weekend passes, day passes, tent hire, rooms to rent, and group booking discounts.
