The New Livingstone Online bringing David Livingstone’s manuscripts to the global public
Wednesday, June 24, 2015

David Livingstone — famous explorer, abolitionist, and missionary — left one of the most important written legacies of any Victorian traveller to Africa. Today, these manuscripts reside, hidden from public view, in archives around the world. In this talk, members of the Livingstone Online team will discuss the most recent phase of the ten-year digital project to bring Livingstone’s original words to a global audience. In particular, the team will cite both accomplishments and challenges in redeveloping the site to engage modern political and aesthetic sensibilities while adhering to international standards of digital archival preservation.

The all new Livingstone Online will offer access to some 7,500 images (12,000 by 2016) of letters, diaries, maps, scientific notebooks, and many more items by David Livingstone and/or contextualizing his life.
Presenters
Adrian S. Wisnicki (University of Nebraska-Lincoln) – Livingstone Online Director and Lead Scholar
Megan Ward (Oregon State University) – Livingstone Online Co-director and Project Scholar
Angela Aliff (Indiana University of Pennsylvania) – Livingstone Online Aesthetic Designer and Research Assistant
