John will briefly talk about the consequences of the Eritrea-Ethiopia war of 1998-2000 for Ethiopian-born ‘Eritreans’: how they were rounded up and detained, had their property confiscated and were deported. He will then shift attention forward to the present period and speak about the presence in Ethiopia of these Eritreans including an examination of their current legal status and situation. The research upon which his talk is based comes from his book ‘Nationalism, Law and Statelessness. Grand Illusions in the Horn of Africa‘ (Routledge, 2013).
