Explore the lives of over 200 Africans living in Tudor England, including John Blanke, Henry VIII’s black trumpeter, Resonable Blackman the silkweaver, and Mary Phyllis, the Moroccan basket-weaver’s daughter. Dr Kaufmann will explain how they arrived here, what occupations and relationships they found and how they were treated by the church, the law courts and the other inhabitants.
Dr Miranda Kaufmann will offer a historical perspective on these questions. You will also hear an inspiration talk by Professor Alan Rice on the achievements of Black personalities in Manchester, whilst participating in a thought-provoking discussion of intersectionality with artist Marcia X.
