Birkbeck Annual Development Studies Lecture 2016

May 12, 2016 @ 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Untangling a Thorny Knot: Migration and Development in the Horn of Africa

In this lecture Dr Laura Hammond will examine the connection between migration in and out of the Horn of Africa and development dynamics. Migration is often explained as a failure of development process, as a demonstration that people have lost hope in the possibilities of their home regions and must look further afield for opportunity, stability and security. Increasingly, development funds are being directed towards areas of origin in an attempt to encourage people to stay in place. Yet there is evidence to suggest that migration may be as much an outcome of development as it is of underdevelopment. There is a need to consider seriously the assumptions behind, and the implications of, the migration-development nexus. In this lecture Dr Laura Hammond will critically examine the relationship between migration and development and offer some possible ways of thinking differently about them.
