Celebrating its 5th year, Africa Writes 2016 will bring together over 50 authors, poets, publishers and experts for a stimulating and exciting three days! Save July 1 – July 3 in your diary for a rich and vibrant programme of book launches, panel discussions, performances, workshops, and an international book fair. This year, Africa Writes focus on new writing, women’s writing, and the idea of disruptive stories (across borders, and boundaries of age, sex and gender).
Africa Writes 2016 will include three headline events: Sex, Love and Poetry an evening of readings and uncensored conversation on sex, love and desire spanning the sexuality spectrum and the African Diaspora experience; On Being a Woman Writer – feminist writer Nawal El Saadawi reflects on the question of gender and the challenges posed for women within traditional and religious societies; and The Immigrant, a provocative play by Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor that explores migration and asylum, if Africa was the most powerful continent in the World.
There will also be an exciting programme of free book launches, readings, talks, panel discussions, performances, children and young people’s workshops, family activities, and an international book fair. Some of the people that have participated in the festival include Warsan Shire, the young poet collaborating with Beyonce in the US! Who knows what other exciting people you might meet!
Africa Writes is an annual festival organised by the Royal African Society, which aims to promote contemporary African writing and writers as well as to explore Africa’s long literary past and its future. Every year Africa Writes showcases established and emerging literary talent from Africa and the Diaspora.
