June 15, 2015 @ 6:30 PM - June 16, 2015 @ 8:30 PM

6.30 pm 15/06/2015: Khartoum, Director: Gadalla Gubara, 17 min
6.30 16/06/2015: Cinema in Sudan: Conversations with Gadalla Gubara, Director: Frédérique Cifuentes, 2008, 52 min

The filmmaking industry in Sudan is experiencing a revival in production that has not been seen since the 1960s. This growth is mostly due to the economic rise at the beginning of the millennia, as well as with the assistance of cultural institutions such as Goethe-Institut in Khartoum’s Sudan Film Factory and the private sector with influences from the Middle East and the Gulf countries. This upsurge in Sudanese filmmaking is a small window into Sudanese society and diaspora, to try to understand how the Sudanese see themselves and how they are seen from the outside world.

This film series is a curatorial research by Azza Satti in the quest to unearth old and new films and documentaries from Sudan and the Sudanese diaspora to understand the cinematic identity of the country, which has been hidden behind strict censorships and lack of financial support.
