Premiere of an innovative poetry, translation and film series celebrating acclaimed British African poets alongside the cultures, languages and women that have nurtured them.
Having asked their mothers translate their work into their mother’s native language, four poets and mothers are filmed in intimate conversation before each reciting a version of the poem.
Featuring Theresa Lola, Tania Nwachukwu, Belinda Zhawi, and Victoria Adukwei Bulley, with translations by their mothers into Yoruba, Igbo, Shona and Ga, respectively.
The four short films will be followed by an exciting discussion and Q&A with the director, participants and award-winning writer Irenosen Okojie, chaired by social historian and broadcaster Emma Dabiri.
The screening will be followed with a Q&A.
Mother Tongues was produced and directed by London-based poet and artist Victoria Adukwei Bulley, with generous support from Arts Council England and Autograph ABP.
