Join 50 Golborne on Thursday, 1st December in conversation with Bev Gibson and Stephanie Ferrario.
Bev Gibson co-founded women artists’ community Ubuhle in 1999 with Ntombephi “Induna” Ntobela, with the aim to revive the lost traditions of bead-making to the women of the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. This enabled the local women to use their restored skills as a means to sustain their livelihoods.
In conjunction with Ubuhle group exhibition ‘Dreams Are Like Water’, Stephanie Ferrario, founder of Lalibella and Give A Future, discusses with Gibson how the economic reality of making a living through craft has also liberated the women to harness their creativity and artistic expression. As the Ubuhle women have mastered the art of beading and continue to exhibit and sell their work internationally, Gibson talks about how they begin to see themselves as more than craftsmen, but as artists in their own right.
